Why Matrescence Education Matters for Professionals Supporting Mothers

If you’ve spent any time on social media lately, you may have noticed something interesting.

The word matrescence is suddenly everywhere.

The recent Tommee Tippee and Peanut campaign, led by Michelle Battersby, has brought this concept into mainstream conversation. Their advertisement in the New York Times has highlighted matrescence, so it is finally being talked about publicly, not just within academic circles.

As awareness grows, the familiar red spellcheck line under the word matrescence is requested to disappear, reflecting its growing recognition in dictionaries and everyday language.

At the same time, there is increasing recognition that mothers need more support during this profound developmental transition.

But for professionals supporting mothers, understanding matrescence requires more than simply knowing the term. It requires formal matrescence education and training.

What Is Matrescence?

Matrescence refers to the developmental transition into and through motherhood. It is a period of psychological, emotional, social, and identity change that unfolds during conception, pregnancy, adoption, birth, early motherhood, middle motherhood, and late motherhood.

Much like adolescence, it is a time of significant transformation.

Yet most mothers move through matrescence without fully understanding it.

When mothers learn about matrescence, many experience a sense of relief. Their challenges begin to make sense. Instead of feeling like they are failing, they realise they are navigating a normal developmental transition, with the support they evolved to have.

What is the definition of matrescence? There is no single universally accepted definition of matrescence.

We define matrescence, based on the work of Dr. Aurélie Athan, as:

“Matrescence is the lifelong process of adapting to the series of changes associated with both becoming and being a mother”.

Why Professionals Need Matrescence Education

As matrescence gains visibility, many practitioners are becoming curious about how to integrate matrescence into their work.

Formal matrescence education helps professionals:

  • Understand the psychological theory behind matrescence

  • Recognise the many domains of change mothers experience

  • Support mothers in making meaning of their transition

  • Apply matrescence knowledge practically in their work

This academic foundation allows practitioners to move beyond surface-level support and offer deeper, more informed care for mothers.

Why This Matters Right Now

The Tommee Tippee campaign has opened an important door.

More people are searching:

  • What is matrescence?

  • Why is motherhood so hard?

  • Why do I feel different after having a baby?

Awareness is rising quickly.

But the reality is that there are still not enough professionals trained in matrescence.

Many practitioners care deeply about supporting mothers but feel unsure how to structure that support or explain what mothers are experiencing.

Formal matrescence education helps bridge that gap. It provides professionals with the language, research, and frameworks needed to support mothers with confidence.

The Future of Maternal Support

Matrescence is moving from academic theory into public conversation. But awareness alone won’t change outcomes. What will change outcomes is professionals who deeply understand matrescence and know how to apply it in practice.

Because when mothers have Matrescence Practitioners who understand this transition, the experience of motherhood can shift from confusion and isolation… to meaning, growth, and transformation.

Every mother deserves a matrescence practitioner because motherhood was never meant to be walked alone.
